Â鶹ÊÓƵ Martha Jefferson offers a high risk breast program aimed at identifying and educating women who may be at greater risk for developing breast cancer.
High risk for breast cancer means that your chance of developing breast cancer is greater than average. This does not mean that you will develop breast cancer but knowing that you are at high risk can help you make important decisions about your health. Prevention, screening and early detection are your best weapons against this disease.
Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines
Women at high risk should consult with a High Risk Breast Program to determine the best screening plan for them. A screening plan may include starting mammograms at an earlier age, having breast MRIs, or taking medicine to prevent breast cancer. What is Included in our Program?
When you contact the High Risk Breast Program, you will speak to our nurse practitioner. They will ask you questions about your personal and family history to determine if you are a candidate for our program. Depending on your particular needs, our program may include:
- Increased surveillance using mammography, ultrasound and/or breast MRI
- Education about lifestyle factors that can affect your risk profile
- Preventive therapies/clinical trials
- Nutrition counseling
- Exercise programs
- Preventative surgery

Palliative care aims to reduce unpleasant side effects and suffering. It’s offered along with other treatments aimed at curing your disease, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Our oncologists may consult the team for help with symptoms such as pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety or shortness of breath. The team also helps with distressing emotional, spiritual or family concerns.
Our team includes a specially trained physician, nurse practitioner, a chaplain and social workers. It is important to note that palliative care is not hospice care, which is offered near the end of a person's life. Instead, its focus is on improving quality of life for people receiving treatment intended to cure them or for people with chronic illnesses. Palliative care referrals are made by your physician.
Unlike other specialties, palliative care is not a self-supporting service. There is no reimbursement for the services of the supportive nurse, chaplain or social workers. We continue to offer this important service with the help of .
Scalp Cooling
Hair loss can be an emotionally difficult side effect of chemotherapy. It can be challenging to feel like everything is out of your control, and you don’t look or feel like yourself. To help ease this burden, we offer Paxman Scalp Cooling to help you retain your hair.Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells. Hair cells, which are the second fastest dividing cells in the body, are often affected by chemotherapy treatment. By cooling the scalp, blood vessels are constricted and cell division slows. This constriction reduces the amount of chemo that reaches your hair follicle cells and can prevent or reduce hair loss. If you choose to use a cooling cap, you wear the cap before, during and after receiving your chemotherapy treatment. Cooling caps are attached to automated machines that continuously circulate cooling fluid through the cap.The FDA has approved the use of cooling cap systems for women with breast cancer. Cooling caps can be used in cancer patients with other solid tumors as well, depending on specific chemotherapy. The decision to use scalp cooling is personal so please talk to your oncologist to see if it is right for you.
